Join us for Holi-dala 4.0: The Råudsaum-dala! As in past Holi-dala classes, Kim will take a rosemaling style and put a holiday spin on it and put that holiday spin on a 12 inch dala horse plaque.
Råudsaumsmåling is based on the Bunad embroidery of Telemark and is traditionally done is three shades of red on a black background.
This class will be taught in oil but as always, acrylic painters are welcome. Some basic knowledge of rosemaling is preferred, but all are welcome. We won’t be teaching basic stroke work in the class.
Below you will find the materials you need for the class as well as where to order your dala horse from Etsy.
Oil color palette:
Cadmium Red (I use Grumbacher brand) or Cadmium Red Medium (not cad red light or dark)
Caput Mortum or Caput Mortum Violet (I use Rembrandt Caput Mortum Violet).
Mars Black
Cadmium Yellow Deep
There are several cadmium alternatives available nowadays that you can choose if you prefer not to use cadmium paints. Caput Mortum violet is a Rembrandt color. it’s the dark color for this style.
Acrylic Colors:
You should be able to find acrylics with similar names, if you can’t find Caput Mortum; you can use purple madder by Josonja or Golden has a Caput mortum.
Backgrounding Colors:
I’m using a black green and a glaze of evergreen by Deco-Art Americana, any brand will do. You can also background your dala horse in the traditional pure black if you choose. Either will work for our Holi-dala.
Other supplies:
Please use your own preferred supplies
Walnut Alkyd Medium by M. Graham or artist grade refined boiled linseed oil
Liquin Original (Nice for dots but OPTIONAL)
Odorless Paint thinner (I use Mona Lisa or Masterpiece Brand but you can also use odorless thinner from hardware store)
Brush cleaner: Dawn dish soap or Pink soap
Paper towels
Painters tape tape measure or ruler Pens/Pencils
Palette paper tracing paper transfer paper
Brushes:
Filberts: Size 2, 4, & 6
Liners: Script or Mid-liner: size 1 (size 2 will work too) I like the Masterstroke brand from Dick Blick www.dickblick.com
You can also use shaders if you prefer. Please use your favorite brushes. These are only suggestions.
A “dotter” or stylus for dot making or use what you typically use for making dots.
Project Woodenware
The project woodenware is a 12” Dala-Horse plaque from CutCraft Concepts on Etsy.
Here is the link for the Dala horse https://www.etsy.com/listing/739041947/dala-horse-shape-large-small-pick-size?
Order 12-inch size. You can order the 1/8 “or ¼” thickness. If you want to hang it, you can also choose to add a hanging hole. (I prefer to add my own hanging holes after I decide where I will hang it).
Paint the entire surface of your project black / green or plain black Americana or Delta Ceramcoat or JoSonja…whatever you have. 2 coats, sand in between. After it is dry, wash on a thin coat of the Evergreen paint. I use a very watered-down wash of the green to brighten the color just a touch. A sealer is optional.
