Painting Valdres Flowers and Leaves

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner – Advanced (some rosemaling experience is helpful)

Course Description:

The Valdres style of rosemaling originated in the Valdres valley and is known for its strong floral motif. This course will emphasize the basic techniques of painting several different flowers and leaves found in Valdres designs through demonstration and practice during class. Students can then apply their skills to projects of their own or in preparation for more advanced Valdres classes. This course will be taught in oils. Acrylic painters are welcome and this class will be offered in acrylics at a later date.

If you’ve wanted to learn more about how to paint Valdres flowers or just need a refresher, this course is for you! A great primer for the upcoming Valdres Then and Now class being offered in August!!

BRUSHES: #2, #4 & #6 filbert (#8 filbert optional)

#1 or #2 liner brush or script liner

Palette paper

Palette knife

Paper towels (lint free)

Walnut alkyd medium or refined linseed oil

Odorless paint thinner or brush cleaner

Tracing paper (also available at Vesterheim or your local craft or art supply store) (for tracing designs)

Transfer paper (available at Vesterheim or on-line) (for transferring designs)

Liquid Dawn dishwashing soap and Vaseline OR Pink Soap for cleaning brushes

Jar with cover for paint thinner

Saran wrap (for paint brushes and covering paints)

ARTIST OIL PAINT COLORS (Rembrandt brand recommended by instructor, but use what brand of artist grade paint you like)

Titanium White Venetian Red Cadmium Red Light

Prussian Blue Burnt Sienna Mars Black

Burnt Umber Raw Umber Greenish Umber

Terre Verde Green Yellow Ochre

Cardboard, Masonite board or something to practice your painting on. This should be backgrounded with acrylic paint in a red (like Heritage Brick or Red Earth), deep blue (like Midnight Blue or Galaxy Blue) dark green (like dark forest or black green) or even black.
