CLASSES ON DEMAND: Kurbitsmaling Scalloped Heart Plate
Join us for a for a fun class painting in the Swedish style of Dalmålning. We’ll be painting a whimsical Kuritsmaling design with elements of tradition along with some modern touches.
The design is painted on a 12-inch heart shaped plate with an 8-inch center (inspired by Valentine’s Day) that is available through us at Nordic Canvas website marketplace. You can also use any plate or bowl with an 8-inch surface. If you have any questions about the piece you choose to paint, just email us and we can talk about any modifications you might need or want to make.
The project will be taught in acrylics, but oil painters are welcome.
MATERIALS LIST
Paints:
Acrylics Oils
Yellow Oxide Yellow Ochre
Storm Blue Prussian Blue
Norwegian Red Venetian or English Red
Burnt Umber Burnt Umber
Titanium White Titanium White
Hooker Green Green Earth
A note about my acrylics…I use JoSonja acrylics, there are many choices and you can use what
you prefer. Any mid blue, green and rusty red / orange will do. Your yellow should be more golden than bright yellow.
Backgrounding:
I backgrounded my plaque in a warm white, !ike Americana brand, but any warm white will do.
JoSonja background color “Linen” is nice too. You can add an all purpose sealer to your top coat of paint; 1 part sealer to 2 parts paint. This can help provide a barrier that makes mistakes or changes easier to remove of the light surface. Some people also like to put a matte varnish on before applying the design. IF you are applying varnish, lightly sand the varnish after it dries to give it a bit of roughness for easier painting.
Brushes:
I’ll be using #2, #4, & #6 filberts
#2 & #4 Shader/flat
#1 & #2 liner.
Other supplies for acrylic painters:
Container for water
Flow medium if you use it (I use JoSonJa’s flow medium for linework)
Paper Towel
Palette (I use a paper plate with moist paper towel to keep the paint moist ) or an old porcelain dinner plate
Tracing paper
Transfer paper for putting the design on the plaque
Small spray bottle to moisten paints
Pen or pencil
We won’t be using other acrylic mediums for this project but you can use what you like
Oil Painters use your typical supplies
WOODENWARE: You can also use any other piece you like. You can also use canvas paper, or whatever surface.
