Skill Level: Advanced Beginner - Advanced
Course Description:
The Valdres style of rosemaling originated in the Valdres valley and is known for its strong floral motif. In this class we’ll take a typical modern Valdres design but use a monochromatic color scheme to paint it. Students can then apply their skills to projects of their own.
If you’ve wanted to learn more about painting in a different color palette, this course if for you! We’ll
be painting with a monochromatic blue palette, but we can discuss different monochromatic color
palettes as well.
This class will be taught in oils. Acrylic painters are welcome but must have a working knowledge of
acrylic paints, mediums and techniques for blending and layering colors.
BRUSHES:
#2, #4, #6 filbert (#8 filbert optional)
#1 or #2 liner brush or script liner
OTHER SUPPLIES:
Palette paper
Palette knife
Paper towels (lint free)
Walnut alkyd medium or refined linseed oil
Odorless paint thinner / brush cleaner
Tracing paper (also available at Vesterheim or your local craft store) (for tracing designs)
Transfer paper (available at Vesterheim or on-line) (for transferring designs)
Liquid Dawn dishwashing soap OR pink soap for cleaning brushes
Jar with cover for paint thinner / brush cleaner
ARTIST OIL PAINT COLORS (Rembrandt brand recommended unless otherwise noted)
Unbleached Titanium White ( I use Williamsburg brand but Grumbacher is good too)
Or
If you wish to mix your own dirty white…titanium white, yellow ochre & raw umber
Prussian Blue
Raw Umber
Mars Black
Titanium White
You’ll also want to have metallic silver and gold acrylic paint for antiquing the plate. Americana or
Ceramcoat brands are fine. You can find them at a local craft store.
BACKGROUND COLOR:
I used Sky Blue, a backgrounding colour by JoSonja. You can find it on her website www.josonja.com or
possibly at www.dickblick.com . It is made by Chroma and should also be available on their website
www.chromaonline.com .
The plate is a 12-inch flat or scoop plate with a single outer bead. You can order it from
www.montzkawoodworking.com but you must give them plenty of notice (at least a month) so order
ASAP. You can also try the Vesterheim Museum store at www.vesteheim.org They often have a supply.
Cardboard, Masonite board or something to practice your painting on is also an option if you like.
