The design is based on the work of Lars Aslakson Trageton, considered to be one of the “founding fathers” of the Rogaland or Ryfylke style of rosemaling. It is based on an early trunk he painted in 1799.
Trageton was born in 1770 in Hallingdal. Trageton lived with an older brother who was a farmer at Trageton in Ustedalen, Hol in Hallingdal. He kept the farm name throughout his life. It is not known where or from whom he learned to rosemal. He may have learned from an older neighbor name Kitil Rygg. Most examples of his work are found in Ryfylke where he moved to in the 1790’s.
